A musically inspired residential design with high building performance goals. This house is oriented around a 3-story atrium ‘music room,’ with a bridge and floating sculptural stair focusing critical views to the south. Using a glazed terracotta finish on the exterior creates an architectural focal point. Targeting R-65 roof insulation and R-35 floor and wall insulation values, minimizing exterior penetrations, and using high-performance glazing increase the energy performance of this design. Southern-oriented glazing encourages solar heat gains in response to Colorado’s heating-dominated climate. Using an ERV air system filters incoming air and dramatically increases the home’s interior air quality.
